What is your voice type?

What am I?  Soprano?  Alto?  Tenor?  Bass?  Baritone?

If I had a £1 for every time someone has said this to me, I’d be a rich, rich woman!

Of course, many of us don’t know where our voice sits in terms of register until we begin to study singing in some way, so now’s the time to find out.

You will need some sort of external musical instrument to work with, but the general rule is illustrated in the chart here.

Most of us have a good octave or more where we can comfortably sing without strain at the top and bottom of the range (and this is KEY!), so if you want to know where your voice sits, try sirening (ooooooo!) up and down your range to see how high and low you can comfortably go.  Good luck!
